REVIEW (from Kimota #14) Back in the mid 70’s during my formative years as a horror and exploitation film devotee, a trilogy of British made movies gave the whole genre a right good shake-up! All produced by one man, these films were ‘House of Whipcord’, ‘Frightmare’, ‘House of Mortal Sin’. All three down to low-budget auteor, one Peter Walker. This excellent tome, put together by Harvey Fenton and his wonderful ‘Fab Press’ small press imprint, puts the spotlight smack on one of Britain’s much ignored and neglected film makers. A large sized paperback weighing in with over 220 juicy pages. A huge amount of illos, posters, film stills and photos providing a major bonus! Conceived and written by noted film historian, Dr Steve Chibnall, lecturer on film and culture studies at De Montfort University, Leicester, the author presents a very detailed and highly entertaining overview of Peter Walker’s career. The book was written with the full co-operation of Peter Walker and his screenwriting ‘Partners in Crime’ and tasty extracts from a very long (5 hours) interview with Mr Walker appear throughout the book, as each of the man’s films (17 in all) are presented and discussed, it is interesting to note the lovely ladies and horror film gods that have strutted their stuff for his cameras. How about Vincent Price, Peter Cushing, Susan George and Stephanie Beecham to start with? This is one very welcome and highly recommended book for genre fans. John Carter |
