REVIEW (from Kimota #13)

How refreshing how well known brand of lager! A very well written, finely researched, insightful and intelligent book, covering the one subject everybody’s got an opinion on, pornography.

Conceived, collated and written by editor and journalist Laurence 0’ Toole, ‘Pornocopia’ seeks to bring (in detail) to our attention the ongoing (and hard to keep up with!) expansion of new technology and methods (CD Rom, Internet etc) that is allowing porn to emerge from the sleazy fleapit shadows and into the suburban sitting room. There seems to be an ever increasing awareness and interest in porn just lately and this book’s lucid mix of critical analysis and ‘TELL IT LIKE IT IS’ reporting, must make it a worthy addition to the other recent in-depth studies that have been published (such as David Flint’s ‘Babylon blue’).

Indeed this work could be classed as the definitive text on the subject (so far). The author knows his subject very well and also draws on many meetings and interviews with various porn figures, porn activists (for and against) the police and law experts. He presents an excellent case for a complete rethink on certain attitudes to the increasing sexualisation of mainstream culture.

Not a book to please our glorious, restrictionist, control freak, new labour regime for sure, but a work of intelligent discussion, I would highly recommend.
