REVIEW (from Kimota #12) A group of people are trapped in a manor house by the snow. And there are things outside wanting to kill them… It sounds like one of the worst hammer movies but the extra details are given with such imagination that it makes the plot very fresh. For instance, this is not the Britain we know. This one (set in the very near future) has been infected, like the rest of the world, with a general malaise called the Ruin. Wars are breaking out and people are dying from mysterious illnesses. The radios and TV no longer work and the high snow keeps any visitors who may be alive away. No news is uncertainty. Is there a world out there or are they the last people in the world. And they are being killed one by one in messy ways. The things outside in the snow cannot be seen, only vague ghostlike images caught out of the side of your eye. And then there are the dreams… more haunting than ghosts. The story along with the terrifically fresh and original writing makes this one of the best stories of last year. It may only be 62 pages long but it packs a lot of punch. Well worth reading.
