REVIEW (from Kimota #9) A trashy light read is probably the best way to describe this novel, which is not a follow-on from Doctor Who whatever the title ‘New Adventures’ suggests. In fact, new is not the way to describe this book as many of the ideas, although quite entertaining, are hardly original. The series, which consists of about twelve books written by various authors, follows the exploits of Bernice Summerfield. She is a fairly young, positively trendy, archaeology expert who alternately consumes large amounts of alcohol, escapes from certain death and, of course, saves the world. Dry Pilgrimage takes her on a cruise which turns into something much more sinister; who are the Saranni, what has happened to her friend Maeve, and what does Maeve’s ex-husband have to do with it all? More importantly do we care? Not enough to plough through the rest of the series I feel. This series is probably best described as soft SF for people who don’t mind reading the same book with twelve different titles, but obviously as I haven’t read the rest that might be slightly unfair. However, as I have absolutely no inclination to read the others, please feel free to write in to Kimota to comment if you have. Davina Marsland |
